NO TAX ON RAINWATER TANKS Water NewsJAN 07

There had been rumors that the government were proposing to tax rainwater collected from residential roofs.

However, Queensland State Governments, Premier Anna Bligh announced that local councils will be banned from taxing water in residential tanks following changes to Water Legislation.

Major measures in the legislation include prohibiting taxes on water in residential tanks and allowing landlords who have installed water-saving devices in rental properties to have individual meters installed on rental properties.

This means landlords who have fitted water-saving devices to rental properties, such as - reduced-flow shower heads and dual flush toilets will be able to charge tenants for their water use. This is designed to encourage homeowners and renters to watch their water usage. The responsibility for taking control of their water use will rest with the person using it.

“This is about being smart and 0fair with our water-saving measures,” Ms.Bligh said.

LATEST NEWS ON THE WATER SITUATION - DEC 07

Level 6 Water Restrictions & Heavy Fines

Queensland water commission has imposed tougher level 6 water restrictions, effective as of the 23rd November 2007. Further restrictions and penalties apply to all households using excessive amounts of water. This includes an outdoor watering ban with fines up to $1050 and restricted water flows.

Excessive water use will be picked up by council’s normal billing process. Homes without a legitimate reason for high water use will be forced to pay severe fines. The outdoor watering penalty is $450 and for a second offence the fine will be $1050 and a flow restrictor will be installed (www.qwc.gov.au). This is a device installed by the council at the household water meter and will limit the flow to approximately 10 Litres per minute. These level 6 water restrictions affect animal and pet care, filling and topping up swimming pools and spas, maintaining garden and lawns, water features and ponds.

The solution recommended by the Queensland Water Commission, is to install rainwater tanks to all areas of Queensland, as we are moving towards Federal water laws, and water will be legislated evenly.

Project 88 is a fantastic initiative and we're proud to be a part of it! Businesses from all over Australian have joined forces to donate materials, products and labour time to build an exclusive house at the beautiful Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast.

All proceeds will be put into the construction of a Children's Playground at the Royal Brisbane Hospital.

Project 88 is of many projects designed to raise money to fund the construction of Children's Playground's at every major hospital in every state of Australia. In addition, this fundraising iniative has a distinct difference in that all aspects of the project are donated and supplied by local and interstate business free-of-charge resulting in 100% of the auction going towards the playground, which means more for the kids!
